DEATH SENTENCE FOR HASAN

DEATH SENTENCE FOR HASAN
Posted August 28th, 2013 @ 2:06pm by Jim Forsyth

A military jury at Ft. Hood today sentenced Nidal Hasan to death for the 2009 rampage that left 13 people dead, 1200 WOAI news reports.

The panel of 13 Army officers deliberated only a couple of hours before reaching its verdict.  Hasan did not offer any evidence in his defense and did not make a closing statement in the punishment phase of his trial.

The panel had the choice of death, life in prison without parole, or life in prison for the shootings that also left 32 people wounded.

Hasan shoed no emotion when the verdict was announced.  His court appointed military lawyers had accused Hasan of seeking the death penalty because he feels that being executed by the U.S. government would make him a 'martyr for Islam.'

Hasan's case will now be automatically appealed, and nobody has been executed under the Uniform Code of Military Justice sine 1961.

The sentence also means Hasan will lose the Major's pay he has been receiving as he sat in a cell at the Bell County Jail awaiting trial.  He has collected more than a quarter million dollars in pay since the shooting.

Hasan is expected to be housed in the Supermax maximum security federal prison in Colorado.
