Police in San Antonio and New Braunfels are trying to track a group of daring bandits who break into ‘big box’ retail stores by rappelling into the store from the roof.

The bandits are known to have broken into two area Target Stores, one in New Braunfels and the other at 1604 and Culebra.

Investigators tell 1200 WOAI news the gang is also suspected in similar break-ins at Best Buy, Kohl’s, and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Once the burglars get into the store through the roof, they remain in the store for a long period of time, gathering up items and piling them next to the fire exit.  They then make their getaway, running out of the fire exit, piling the items into pickup trucks, and making their getaway before police or fire trucks respond to the alarm.

Investigators say the burglars wait to exit until the first employees arrive in the morning.  Since the employees think they have accidentally set off the fire alarm, frequently the alarm is cancelled, and the burglars are even further away before the crime is noticed.

Crime Stoppers of San Antonio says it will pay $5,000 for information that leads to the arrest of the individuals.
