An East Texas man is suffering from a rare disease which basically turns his digestive system into a brewery, leaving him in a state of constant inebriation.

1200 WOAI's Michael Board has learned of the case, which was identified by researcher Dr. Barbara Cordell at Panola College in Carthage as 'Auto-Brewery Syndrome.'

"It was uncomfortable and it was frightening," she said.  "Because he never knew when he was going to be drunk."

The 61 year old man, whose name has not been released, has a very rare disease where his stomach produces a yeast, which has the same impact on the starchy foods that he was digesting as the brewing process, turning his semi-digested food into beer.

"Somehow alcohol was showing up in his blood stream, and they think it was related to this overgrowth of yeast," she said.

The beer would then be absorbed into the man's bloodstream, leaving him, in many cases, legally drunk without him ever swallowing any liquor at all.

The man has been placed on an anti-fungal medication while doctors try to figure out a long term treatment for a condition which is defiantly no party.
