Arson investigators were busy today, trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed the landmark New Jerusalem Baptist Church on the city's east side this morning, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

The building had been abandoned and was being renovated, which officials say makes the cause of the fire suspicious.

Flames were shooting out of a building adjacent to the sanctuary when firefighters arrived about 4AM at the church at North Hackberry and Burnet.

By the time firemen got there, they realized there was little they could do to salvage the structure.  The roof collapsed and the building is a total loss.

  Nobody was hurt.

The fire poured smoke into nearby neighborhoods and caused a traffic problem for morning commuters.
