Charles Cheever Jr, who led Broadway Bank for more than 40 years and is credited with building the institution founded by his father into one of the largest and most successful independent banks in Texas, is listed in critical condition at SAMMC today following a traffic accident, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Cheever and his wife Nancy were returning from church when the one car accident occurred, according to a statement from the bank.  Nancy is listed in good condition.

Cheever joined Broadway Bank in 1957, a few years after graduating from West Point.  He is credited with building Broadway into a strong financial institution during the recession of the late 1980s, when many banks and savings and loans closed their doors.

The new administration building at the Broadway's main bank at Loop 410 and Nacogdoches is named in Cheever's honor.

Cheever's father, Col. Charles Cheever, Sr., founded the Broadway bank, on Broadway, in 1941.
