Long time Ft. Sam Houston ISD School Board President Keith Toney today was named to fill the District Two San Antonio City Council seat vacated last month when Ivy Taylor was elected mayor, Newsradio 1200 WOAI reports.

Toney was one of three finalists chosen yesterday from among 12 applicants for the council seat.  Toney will serve until a special election in November.  He didn't say if he will seek the seat in that election.

Toney said his experience on the school board will count for a lot.

"I'm the only candidate who, as a school board president, has approved budgets in excess of $1 million," Toney said. "Even more important than the approval was the process to get to the approval.  I've done that."

Toney stressed his private sector and public board expertise, at a time when the City Council is wrestling with the budget and questions over collective bargaining.

"You don't need someone here who has a long and steep learning curve," Toney said.  "You need somebody who doesn't have an agenda to move things forward."

Also appointed today was Mari Aguirre Rodriguez to temporarily fill in for Cris Medina as the District Seven council seat while Medina is in Washington DC undergoing military training.

Aguirre Rodriguez is the former Community Affairs Manager for Rackspace.  She is Executive Director of Generation Tx.
