The increasingly tense public dispute between the president of the flagship University of Texas at Austin and the UT system board of Regents, especially Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, moved into a new phase on Friday, as the Associated Press reported that President William Powers was ordered to resign or be fired.
The Regents and Powers have been squabbling for years, over everything from Powers' salary to the exit of UT Football Coach Mack Brown and the hiring of his successor.
The latest dispute involves demands by Regent Wallace Hall for stacks of documents relating to alleged wrongdoing and misuse of office by Powers. Some in the Texas House have responded with an attempt to impeach Hall.
The allegations have included favoritism in admissions, and Cigarroa has appointed a committee to investigate those charges. Other incidents which have prompted tension include tuition increases at the university.
