Six teachers and two principals were surprised with the news at their schools by H-E-B representatives and were presented with a check of $1,000 for themselves and another $1,000 for their schools.

Mary Lagleder, a U.S. History teacher at Warren High School, said she was shocked when they opened the door with balloons, flowers and a cake and told her the good news.

“It’s an honor, I’m still speechless,” she said. “I love teaching; it was something I was born to do… I love coming to work everyday... the fact that I could have some role on my [students'] future is amazing and that in itself is an honor."

Lagleder, will go on to compete against five others in her region at a statewide level in May for a chance to win cash prizes totaling $430,000.
