David Schwimmer's Beer-Stealing Doppelgänger Arrested, British Police Say

British police say they've nabbed a shoplifting suspect seen on camera stealing a jacket, wallet, a phone and some beer from a restaurant located in Blackpool, northwest England.

Footage of the shoplifter went viral last month after cops in Blackpool posted the still from  video surveillance footage. The man seen in the photo bore a remarkable resemblance to the character played by David Schwimmer on the NBC TV Show "Friends," a fact that Twitter had a field day pointing out.

Lancashire Police announced Tuesday that a 36-year-old man had been arrested in London on suspicion of theft. They even gave a shout-out to the (most likely) not-guilty Schwimmer, thanking him for his help spreading the word about the thief.

Following the appeal we posted looking for a man who resembles a well-known actor, we now have an update. Thanks to our colleagues @MetPoliceUK,  a 36-year-old man was arrested in Southall last night on suspicion of theft. Thanks for the support, especially @DavidSchwimmer!

The actor appeared to take the mistaken identity in good humor. Schwimmer posted video on Twitter that showed him looking suspicious while clutching a carton of beer in a convenience store. In the caption, Schwimmer claimed his innocence for the theft in Blackpool writing that he was too busy stealing beer in New York.

"Officers, I swear it wasn't me. As you can see, I was in New York."
