Legendary Fleetwood Mac singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Christine McVie has passed away at age 79.

According to a statement from the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's family, she passed "peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness. She was in the company of her family."

The family continued, asking for privacy and requesting "everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally."

Fleetwood Mac mourned the late-singer-songwriter in a statement of its own.

"There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie," the band said in a release. "She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed."

Born Christine Anne Perfect, McVie began her professional music career in 1967. By 1968 she married Fleetwood Mac cofounder and bassist John McVie and changed her name.

Christine joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 and soon began contributing songs and arrangements to the band's albums.

She is best known for songs like "Don't Stop," "Over My Head," "Say You Love Me," "Think About Me" and many others.

Earlier this year, Christine released her Songbird collection of solo music. Speaking with Rolling Stone around the release, the singer said there was only a slight possibility of more Fleetwood Mac shows in the future.

"I don't know. It's impossible to say," she said at the time. "We might get back together, but I just couldn't say for sure."

In the same interview, she complimented recent Fleetwood Mac additions Neil Finn and Mike Campbell and lamented the fact that she had fallen out of touch with her long-time bandmate Stevie Nicks since the last Fleetwood Mac tour.

Christine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 as a member of Fleetwood Mac.
